Diary of a Founder:
Come on a Recce

Come on a location recce with our Founder and Creative Director, Megan Ziems, as she scouts the small Greek island of Folegandrosthe location for our VIVA campaign.

Folegandros came onto our radar when we discovered Gundari, a resort that was in the process of opening its doors. The island’s untouched, raw beauty immediately drew me in. Its authentic, bohemian essence was the perfect energy for our VIVA campaign. I’m big on energy when it comes to planning a campaign—everything, from the location to the model and the entire team, has to align with the vibe.

VIVA was such an important campaign for us, marking our first mainline collection in two years. I started planning the way I always dowith a brain dump of words, emotions, music, and inspirations that embody the designs. Words like ‘raw beauty,’ ‘adventure,’ and ‘energy’ stood out as key themes that were really significant. For me, it’s about translating the intention behind the collection into a campaign that truly reflects our designs.

When it came to choosing the perfect location, the Greek island of Folegandros instantly rose to the top of the list. The Church of Panagia is an iconic, clifftop church that looks over the main village, Chora. Its wild, rugged stone zigzag pathway dominates the landscape, and the church itself looks as though it’s watching over the entire island. Instantly, I wanted her to be the leading lady of the campaign. I can’t help it; I always give places and designs a personality and think of them as women with character and spirit. The character and spirit of the VIVA collection matched that of the Church of Panagia and the surrounding elements of Folegandros.

Arriving on the island was easyI was based in Spain during that time of year, so flew into Santorini and got a separate boat to Folegandros. The team at Gundari picked us up and drove us to their location, where we stayed for the following ten days. I started my recce for the campaign the following day, making the Gundari team laugh as I insisted on jogging/walking everywhere to get the lay of the land and capture any photo opportunities. I was creating an in-depth document to send back to the marketing team to help plan the shoot day.

Out of everywhere I’ve travelled, Folegandros stands out as one of the most wild and rugged places I’ve explored - made for those who love being off the beaten path. Walking up to the Church of Panagia was incredible; I spent hours there capturing photos and videos of the frames I wanted for the campaign, testing the sun and lighting, and mapping out which dress and styling would suit each setting. The sunrise up there was incredible, and the sunset view was pure magic.

Over the week, I explored so many different locations, including beaches you can only get to by boat, coves you can only get to by swimming under a rock and getting lost in a bee farm that led to a 200-metre cliff drop into the ocean. It was day after day of exploring and adventure with my husband and two boys. We all loved it and will be back, that’s for sure.
